FIERA DEL CACIO:
Location: Pienza, Siena
Date: Late August - Early September
Pecorino Cheese Festival – The tiny village of Pienza came into being when Aeneas Silvius de Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II, was born in the little village of Corsignano. He renamed it Pienza and set about transforming it into a birthplace worthy of himself by building the impressive Duomo and palazzi that edge the grand piazza in its center. When this little festival first began more than a century ago, it was a simple market meant to sell whatever was left over from the last production. It has since grown to be more of a celebration of many local products that line the single street of Pienza, many of which are piled high with round wheels of the straw-colored Pecorino cheese that inspires the event.

VOLTERRA CITY FAIR:
Location: Volterra
Date: September 22nd
A veritable Tuscan bazaar held to celebrate Saint Sebastien. Don’t forget to try the to-die-for nut brittle - local’s call it “adormenta suocere”, which translates to “makes your mother-in-law fall asleep”!

VENDEMMIA:
Location: Celebrated in the wine-growing regions of Italy
Date: Late September – but depends on the weather and the harvest
Grape Harvest - During this week, winegrowers from Lecce to Trento are finishing up the Vendemmia, which is the culmination of an entire year's work. The grape harvest remains an important part of Italian culture, dating as far back as the discovery of wine itself. From small families that make only enough wine to last them for a year at the dinner table, to the giants of the wine industry, the Vendemmia is the telltale moment to either celebrate a bountiful crop or lament a year's worth of work gone down the drain. This harvest tradition began to take shape during the times of the Roman Empire. The slippery, squishy sensation of grapes between the toes is the reward after months of tilling, fertilizing, watching and waiting. Traffic slows due to the high number of tractor-pulled wagons laden with grapes, but no one seems to mind.
